How to Get into God's Word More
Posted on July 14, 2024 • 4 min read • 811 wordsI hear you. You're busy, tired, overloaded, and feeling like there aren't enough hours in the day. Let me assure you, I am not trying to add another checkbox to your overwhelming to-do list! I want to encourage and empower you with my top tips to getting into God's word daily.
I often hear people say:
“I want to read my bible more, but I am just so busy.”
“I can’t seem to find the time.”
“I want to pray more, but I just don’t.”
But, hear me. This one thing changes EVERYTHING. It will absolutely affect every facet of your life: how your view your life, how you think about yourself, how you react and respond to others.
That’s why it is crucial we get back to the one thing that is essential to us living, loving, thinking, and feeling better. And who doesn’t want that? Move from barely surviving to truly thriving. Stop trying to do life on your limited strength and energy, and tap into the source that never runs out.
These resources were truly game changing for me.
If you feel like you don’t have the time to read the Bible, you can have the Bible read to you! There are totally free apps that will have his Word at your fingertips every second of every day. Whether you are driving, showering, folding laundry, washing dishes, exercising, waiting in the carpool line, or outside your kid’s extra-curricular activity.
(Psst…this option is also great for those that say, “I don’t like to read.”)
Honestly, there are days when I feel mentally and physically exhausted. I will cuddle up with a blanket, and have the Bible app read to me.
Two solid, free audio Bible apps:
Simply pick a book of the Bible and push play.
Pro Tip: If you’ve never read the Bible before, I would highly recommend starting with the “red letters,” which are found in the the books of the Gospel: Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. These are the words of Jesus!
Another great resource for on-the-go time with God are podcast sermons. This is not a substitute for getting into God’s Word, but it is an excellent aid. There are so many podcast episodes I have listened to that have furthered my understanding of a chapter of the Bible with historical context and depth.
There are many excellent podcasts to choose from. To get you started, here are a few of my favorites:
Again, there are so many more to choose from. I listen on the Spotify app, but listen on the podcast app you prefer!
Okay, let’s explore free bible study apps. Bible study apps are excellent for getting into the depth of the text with historical context.
We never want to come to God’s Word and force our own interpretation, taking his Word out of its intended context. That’s dangerous, and can honestly become self-serving. Going to trusted sources to understand its true message is a great tool (especially for some of those more complicated passages.)
Take your pick:
Enduring Word App
It literally goes line-by-line with historical facts and rich commentary from theologians. I can’t tell you how many chapters I have re-read in this app, and walked away with such a deeper understanding of the text.
The Bible Project App
They not only have an audio Bible option, but videos, podcasts, articles, and more! Whether you are a visual or auditory learner, they have an option for helping you dive deeper.
First 5 App
This one is fantastic for doing brief daily Bible plans alone or as a group! There is a massive community on there that will comment and respond to your comments if you choose to participate. You can also pick one of the books and invite your friends and family members to join you so you can connect directly over the daily readings with comments. They have single book plans and multi-book plans for both testaments.
It doesn’t have to look official to be legit! You could literally do this with one person, or as many as you want! You can do it in-person, over video chats, the phone, or even via text.
Connecting with others along your faith walk is biblical. We weren’t meant to do life alone. We were created for community, and to love and be loved. Not to mention, it is proven that working on a goal with someone else will heighten your success through accountability.
Is there at least one person you trust that you want to share this journey with? Now, do the biggest step and reach out to them and ask if they would prefer to do it via text, call, video, or in-person.
Remember, this changes everything.
Draw near to God and he promises to draw near to you.
Don’t waste another minute; he’s inviting you into relationship right now.
